Collectables Records ( March 14, 2006 ), Genre: Rock & Pop 2 LPs on 1 CD: BORN FREE(1967)/LOVE, ANDY(1967). Also available as part of the Collectables box THE LEGEND AT HIS BEST!. BORN FREE originally released on Columbia (9840). LOVE, ANDY originally released on Columbia (9566). Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont. Andy Williams delivers these 1960s ballads with reliably smooth romance. This double-CD holds 23 songs whose melodies and lyrics are usually not viewed as representative of 1967's music. Although we may think of that time in terms of the rebellious and uninhibited rock culture, Williams wrote an overlooked chapter in history, combining old-time charm and airy flower-power harmonies. Movie themes like "Born Free" are crooned loud and clear with solid drama. Andy's voice is aided by a silky vocal chorus and violins. There's much more than cuteness to "Somethin' Stupid." Timeless and intelligent, Williams' mellifluous delivery oozes sincerity. It's a personal performance. Even when he takes on the upbeat bugaloo-bounce of "Music to Watch Girls By," An... |

Important Records ( March 24, 2009 ), Genre: Folk Brethren of the Free Spirit: James Blackshaw (guitar); Jozef Van Wissem. Named for the heretical Christian sect of the 13th and 14th centuries, the Brethren of the Free Spirit are 12-string guitarist James Blackshaw and vanguard Baroque lute master Jozef Van Wissem ("Baroque" is a noun here). The pair issued All Things Are from Him, Through Him, and in Him in 2007, in a limited edition of 1000 copies that sold out quickly. Like its predecessor, The Wolf Shall Also Dwell with the Lamb is a brief set at 30 minutes. It contains four structured improvisations played in DADEAD tuning on Blackshaw's guitar and D-Minor tuning on the lute. The feel is lyric, relaxed, and quite deliberate. The pair showcases tonal variations in mode, texture, and dynamic, all within a proscribed range of expressive possibilities. Where the first album was more haunting and nearly ambient and openly experimental, this one is more communicative, with lots of exchanges in both rhythmic pulse and open string drones that offer a dialo... |

Caroline Distribution ( June 05, 1992 ), Genre: Rock & Pop X-Ray Spex: Poly-Styrene (vocals); Jak Airport (guitar); Rudi Thomson (saxophone); Paul Dean (bass); BP Hurding (drums). X-Ray Spex is notable for a number of reasons. Chiefly, it was one of the very few bands UK punk bands with female members. One of the group's distinguishing characteristics is their decidedly un-punk use of saxophones. Most importantly, though, X-Ray Spex's first effort is actually a good record! Fronted by Marion Elliot, who called herself Poly Styrene in those days, Spex managed to capture something that many punk rock bands missed. They always sounded like they were having a really great time. Many of the lyrics deal with appearance and perception ("Identity," "I Can't Do Anything," "I A ClichT"), and most are quite funny, sung in Elliot's proudly unschooled, nasal voice. The music is based on standard-issue buzzing punk guitar and propulsive drumming but also features Rudi Thompson's clever, aggressive sax. Though the CD mysteriously re-sequences the track listing of the original ... |

A&M (USA) ( February 19, 1991 ), Genre: Rock & Pop Personnel: Roddy Lorimar, Roddy Lorimer (trumpet). Recording information: Chipping Norton Studios. Photographer: Colin Bell. With the help of noted producer Hugh Jones (Echo and the Bunnymen, R.E.M., among many others), the Kitchens sound more comfortable with the studio and just plain bigger. The amazing opener, "Railwayed," starts with a sweet, echoed guitar riff aiming for the heavens above a brisk rhythm exchange then kicks into a catchy chorus. Following that, the re-recording of their early single "Quick as Rainbows" turns out even better, combining a great lyric melody -- and a great lyric, reflecting on a person's inability to find love, delivered with Fitzgerald's trademark dry yet emotional voice -- with ripping music, building higher and higher as the song goes until Swales' guitar beautifully explodes over everything down to the final angry lyric. Strange Free World can't top that sublime beginning, but it often gets quite close. Fitzgerald's gay-themed lyrics seem almost more urgent and in m... |
